Springfield, N.J., May 8, 2003, 3:00 PM EST - What do you do when one of the nation's most popular baseball players swings by your minor league stadium for a rehab stint? You welcome him with open arms, a packed house... and security measures never before seen at the Trenton Thunder's Waterfront Park.

New Jersey-based Strike Force Protective Services was called in this week to provide bodyguards, crowd control, press screening and dugout security for Derek Jeter. The New York Yankee's star shortstop joined the Double-A Thunder for five games while he tests the left shoulder he separated back on opening night.

"There are a thousand things we need to think of when someone of Jeter's stature comes into a facility that is not used to supporting this kind of attention," says Fred Goldring, President and CEO of USI Services Group/Strike Force Protective Services. "We need to predict every conceivable situation and be ready to react at a moment's notice in a multitude of ways."

Security measures began at 12:00 noon for the 7:00 PM game Wednesday with a full sweep of every conceivable place Jeter would be in the ballpark, including the dugout, front offices, pressroom and hallways connecting those areas. By the time game time rolled around, Strike Force had 15 men positioned on the field and around the stadium.

"As the crowd watches the game, we watch the crowd," says Goldring, who says his men keep their eyes open for anything out of the ordinary, such as an individual wearing a heavy coat on a warm spring night. "We are basically protecting Jeter from the unforeseen. Because the public loves their idols so much, fans can unfortunately become obsessive - whether it be by attempting to thrust themselves into a celebrity's life, or by trying to harm them."

Strike Force Protective Services has previously provided security for celebrities Paul McCartney, Barry Manilow, and Bon Jovi, and at venues such as Asbury Park, the Apollo Theater and the Hammerstein Ballroom.
